Excursion 2: Jimbocho Rare Book Excursion

5-7 in each group due to very small shop spaces.

Excursion regulations and guideline

1. Photographs and videos are strongly prohibited in the shops.
2. Family members are not allowed to participate due to very small shop spaces.
3. Please ask JADH or shop staffs before touching any item.
4. All items are purchasable, please inquire JADH staff for more information.
5. If number of registered participants exceed 7 persons, I will choose participants by drawing lottery.

Description
Jimbocho (神保町), known as one of the largest secondhand book markets in the world, is in the Kanda district of Tokyo. Jimbocho has 176 bookstores and many of them are antiquarian rare books from both domestic and overseas. The majority of book shops on Yasukuni-dori are located on the south side only, which is said to protect books from damage by sun exposure.
As JADH and TEI 2018 conferences venue is in Jimbocho, we would like to take this opportunity to host an excursion of this world famous book town.
In this excursion, we got special collaboration from 3 renowned bookstores in Jimbocho, Ohyashobo, Gyokueido Shoten, and Isseido Shoten.

Ohyashobo （大屋書房）, one of the oldest bookstore in Jimbocho founded in 1882, specialized in ancient books, maps and ukiyo-e prints from Edo period (17th – 19th century). Not only the bookstore itself looks exactly like ones from Edo period, many printed works by famous artists like Hokusai, Hiroshige, Eisen, Toyokuni, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi, Kunichika, Kiyochika originally from their time are also available here.


Gyokueido Shoten　（玉英堂書店）, found in 1902, is specialized in rare books and manuscripts in wide range from classic to modern (post World War II) from both domestic and international. Real handwritten manuscripts by Japan most famous writers like Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Edogawa Rampo are available here.


Isseido Shoten （一誠堂書店）founded in 1911, is the most influential antiquarian bookseller in Japan. They have biggest collection of rare books and manuscripts in fine arts, archaeology, literature and society in both Japanese and foreign languages. Amazing collections in Isseido Shoten is beautiful Chirimen books which is book printed on Chirimen fabric in various languages and huge collection of Western rare books from 18th century.
